We. Just. Keep. Getting. Bigger. Yep! Just like the name suggests the triple crochet is 3 times the size of a regular single crochet. It’s a very tall stitch, which makes it great for scarves and such because you can quickly get the length while getting an airy feel. If you thought double crochets were fast, you haven’t seen anything yet.
Let’s start work on that all too familiar foundation chain. Make a chain of 15 stitches.
1. Yarn over TWICE. Insert your hook into the 5th chain from the hook.
2. Yarn over. Pull through the chain. You should have 4 loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over. Pull through the first 2 loops on hook. You should have 3 loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over. Pull through the first 2 loops on hook. You should have 2 loops on the hook.
5. Yarn over. Pull through the final 2 loops on hook. You should have 1 loop on the hook. Congrats! You just finished your first triple crochet.
Repeat steps 1-5 in the next chain from the stitch. Continue making triple crochets until the end of your row. You should have 12 stitches in total. Just like the double crochet your skipped chains at the start count as a triple crochet on their own.
Take a look at your first row of stitches. Study how the triple crochet looks. Notice the Vs and the 2 lines going across it.
Now let’s work on the 2nd row of triple crochet stitches. Chain 4 then turn your work for the next row. Yarn over twice, insert hook into the 2nd stitch of the first row. Yarn over, pull through the stitch. Yarn over, pull through first 2 loops on hook. Yarn over pull through the first 2 loops on hook. Yarn over pull through final 2 loops on hook. Continue making triple crochet stitches to end of row. Remember to stitch into the first rows chain stitch as it does count as a triple crochet. Same with the 4 chains at the beginning of this row.
Be sure to count your stitches to ensure that you keep making only 12 per row.
Just like the half double crochet and the double crochet in the previous lesson, the alternative works for the triple crochet! The zig-zags and gaps are more noticeable with such a tall stitch so give the alternative a try AFTER you fully learn the correct technique.
Practice the triple crochet stitch!
Make a piece that is 14 single crochets long. So you’ll need to start with 17 chain stitches. Make 10 rows. Repeat, repeat, repeat! I don’t know why, but I absolutely love this stitch! I rarely ever use it, but I find it such a joy to do.
